TWINNING MONTMOREAU AND HOLVING

HOLVING, commune de Moselle, communauté de communes de l’Albe et des Lacs, canton de Sarralbe, arrondissement de Sarreguemines, Lorraine.

The Holvingeois and the Montmoréliens have been friends since 1939 when the region of Moselle was evacuated to the Charente.

Marie was seventeen and she remembers: “We just left with our cows and carts, carefree as can be at that age. But when we had to leave our animals down the road, that’s when we started feeling the uneasiness of the situation. Travelling inside a goods wagon was painful for the old and the very young. The thirst, most of all! But as we arrived in Montmoreau on September 8th, we all felt a warm welcome” (Bulletin municipal HOLVING 2000, p. 18).

“A new life began for the Holvingeois, far away from their homeland. A new life made of exchanges, small favours in troubled times, births, first steps and friendships. Within a year, the bond between the Charentais and the Lorrains was strong.

Back in their homeland, the grateful families kept in touch.” (J.F. Schneider, www.cc-albe-lacs.com)

There is a rue de Holving, in Montmoreau and a rue de Montmoreau in Holving. A twinning agreement was signed in 1999 in Holving and in 2000 in Montmoreau. Holving has a club called “Les amis des Charentais”, and the A.J.M. of Montmoreau has a section called “Les amis de Holving”.The communes take it in turns to visit each other, thus maintaining the tradition of exchange.
